jami bassols has been a close member of hivern since its beginnings as one half of aster. now, following the release of noche/ templo, his two acclaimed edits for nvh, he returns to the label with his solo debut as jmii. in thrills, the barcelonian producer displays a sound that s equally raw and lively, with a very personal sense of quirkiness. the title track is jmii s most expansive production to date. an uplifting house number built around an elastic bassline and sprinkled with a bubbly arpeggiated melody, echoed vocal snips and ravey pads. bailar is a sort of lunatic take on chi-house, with a crude bassline, psychotic organ chords and feverish percussion coming together to form an ultra-infectious groove. tightbrass follows a similar path, but conducted by frenzied synthetic horns that bring to mind a marching band of manic robots. in his remix, comeme s christian s. brings the track to a darker territory, reducing it to it s core elements and focusing in a nasty bassline that will for sure cause serious damage in the dancefloors in the upcoming months.

last year saw the mysterious garage shelter make their debut appearance on skylax, and little is still known about them! all we know is they are back with some freshness on the skylax classic sublabel. first up is bring back love, a track that will sink its claws in with that infectious vocal sample hook. sticking with the old school sample vibe is the lonely heart dub of attempt, it’s a bit more mellow but still has plenty of groove in it. friend of the garage shelter, dj la foudre, appears over on the b side with it’s alright (signal st mix). still on that catchy sample tip, it features one of the grooviest bassline and funky guitar pairings i’ve heard in a long time. next up, perception 66 is a smooth house affair from yet another friend, asa no hikari. rounding out the package is garage shelter’s own you (still), a dreamy pad-driven track that may indeed be the pick of the release. while we don’t know much about garage shelter, we can’t help but look forward to what they come out with next!

janette jnett pitruzzello is considered something of a legend in her home city of melbourne, where she’s been djing for well over two decades. here, she delivers her debut solo ep, featuring a quartet of tracks co-produced by maurice fulton. the latter also delivers a solo mix of opener reflection, which adds a little leftfield disco sparkle and percussive sweatiness to an otherwise organ-heavy deep house groove. theres a similarly cheery, funky and disco-tinged feel to the rolling, cut-up house goodness of swangzipani. elsewhere, the duo gets a little stranger in pursuit of dancefloor thrills bubbles away is deliciously dark, wonky and intergalactic, while judge not wanders off into head-nodding, instrumental hip-hop territory.

frankfurt based producer, dj and music lover martin heimann presents his debut single salto on carry on 008. remaining faithful to its name, the small label puts out another piece of limited wax every once in a long while. enrooted in the soundscapes of 80s proto house the original version of salto is a thriving piece of octave liberation. consistent changes between harmonics break up the repetitive structure, while fm pads and the 303 are performing a little duet. the release is ennobled by two proper remixes from moon b (peoples potential unlimited) and jex opolis (good timin). while moon b keeps it bubblin’ with some extra analogue funk bounce and subtle italo dance floor energy, the b-side is jexi-fied with some embellishment to the cords, change in the bassline and a nice 808 snap. on top mr. opolis adds some mysterious but cheesy vocals samples that match perfect with the moody 80s orchestral stabs.

on his first release for berceuse heroique, rotterdam’s finest dj overdose meets one of the strongest producers of detroit, mr. ob ignitt. overdose creates the best soundtrack for a “march of the robots” scene with dead city. the mighty bounce of early dr. dre productions meets some nasty electro carnage. on sorry to disappoint you can hear the classic west coast electro sound of some of his older releases mixed with some funky sci-fi synth lines. then, ob ignitt takes this monster of a tune and creates one of the gnarliest house tunes of this year with a proper g funk bassline that will properly test your sound system on a good night.
